THE ESSENCE OF SLOW TRAVEL
For me, travel is a precious opportunity to seek out the authentic and the unforgettable, and to uncover local artisans, hidden moments elevated by art and beauty, and the businesses and individuals shaping the places they call home.
It’s this spirit of rare access that makes each Hosted Edition so unique; every journey is conceived as a curated encounter. It invites those seeking inspiration to step into environments where textile making continues as part of daily life. Rather than staged settings or formal demonstrations, together we are welcomed into artisans’ homes and working studios – places where knowledge is practiced, repeated and carried forward.
The experience is intentionally intimate. We observe materials in process, witness techniques as they are used and engage through conversation shaped by proximity and care, not by presentation. It’s this closeness that defines our travels: gaining direct and unique access to ways of making that have evolved over centuries, yet remain active and profound to this day.
The journey unfolds at a measured pace, allowing understanding to develop naturally through presence and observation. What remains is not a checklist of activities, but a deeper appreciation for creation.
Hosted Edition — Mai Chau
The first time I arrived in Hanoi, I was overwhelmed. That distinctive cacophony of motorbikes, horns and a city moving at pace was all-consuming and difficult to read. However, riding through the tree-lined boulevards of the old French quarter, I sensed a change – after all, Hanoi reveals itself to those who look closely in layers, and each one became clearer only when I stopped trying to keep up.
Beyond the city, the valley opened itself to me through vast horizons of mountains, rice terraces and softer air. It was time with the artisans, however, that unveiled the most meaningful moments. To sit beside a loom, to watch threads take shape and allow conversation to give way to shared attention – in these moments, quiet exchanges take on lasting significance and impact.
In this very spirit, I’ve envisioned this Hosted Edition to unfold as an insight-led passage. It’s a chance for visitors to soak in both the urban cadence of Hanoi and the mountainous landscape of Mai Chau – a region defined by rhythm, presence and a distinct cultural identity within Vietnam.
JOURNEY OUTLINE
Day One
The journey begins in Hanoi, where historical layers and contemporary life coexist within the city’s daily rhythm. After arrival and settling into the hotel, we gather for a welcome drink – a quiet moment of arrival and introduction.
The evening is left intentionally open, allowing time to rest, orient, and ease into the pace of the days ahead. Guests are invited to join me for an intimate dinner – a chance to indulge the senses, share hopes and aspirations, and forge connections for the days ahead.
Mai Chau Hosted Edition
Day Two
Art and beauty abound in Hanoi, and I never tire of showcasing the treasures this city has to offer. The day unfolds through selected encounters across Hanoi’s material and cultural landscape – we’ll wander through museums, antique spaces and working studios, each of which offer up context into how creativity and craft continue to circulate within the city.
Time is spent in conversation and observation with local creative practitioners, allowing insight to emerge into how technique, material, and continuity adapt across rural and urban environments.
Day Three
Leaving the city behind, we travel north towards Mai Chau, moving through forested terrain and mountainous landscapes. The transition marks a shift in rhythm, as scale, sound, and pace begin to change.
Upon arrival at Avana Retreat, our base in Mai Chau, we share a meal and settle into the surroundings, allowing the landscape to set the tone for the days to follow
Day Four
The day turns our attention to hemp: a material deeply embedded in the region’s textile culture. We spend time observing its transformation from fibre to cloth, following processes shaped by rhythm, skill, and long-established practice.
Moments of guided participation, including batik and freehand fabric drawing, allow space for personal interpretation while remaining grounded in material discipline. The day closes with a shared evening meal, offering a pause to reflect on the exchanges and impressions gathered along the way.
Day Five
Day five begins with a quiet morning meditation, setting a measured rhythm before turning our focus to the wonders of silk and its place within local textile practice. We spend time with a White Tay household, following the silkmaking process from farm to cocoon and observing how the material is prepared, dyed, and worked.
Natural dyes drawn from indigenous plants and flowers introduce the region’s distinctive palette. Botanicals are gathered from the garden, offering a quiet understanding of how silk, colour, and environment remain closely intertwined within daily life.
Day Six
The final morning is intentionally unstructured. Guests may linger over breakfast, spend time within the landscape, or return to unfinished thoughts and conversations.
Departure in the afternoon is gentle and unhurried. What remains is not an itinerary completed, but a lasting impression shaped by pace, access, and the rare luxury of sustained attention.
